We are a group of youths discussing issues around the world that raise our interests and concerns. The  young members come from all walks of life in different regions of the globe.

We gather quarterly a year online and exchange ideas and insights from members with different background in English. For some members, English is a challenge, however, still we are inspired to discuss issues emerging in the world.

Welcome anyone who are thrilled to vocalize one's thought and passion to friends across the oceans.

As for 2024, we are collaborating with The Health, Environment & Agriculture Development Program (HEADP-Nepal ) to explore global public health issues in Nepal and other countries. As our first initiative,  we are planning to a create a survey and collect data on pursuit of happiness in Nepali youths in the 20s.  How exciting to run discussions to develop a survey as a global team!

Upcoming May 11 Event on Pursuit of Happiness

We have decided to collect some data from the Nepali youths in the 20s to  analyze their perception on happiness. We hope to reach out to Nepali youths inside/outside of Nepal.

Myriad of literatures on pursuit of happiness exist and World Happiness Report has abundant data from all over the world. However, there are not any happiness research targeted only to Nepali youths. This will be a very valuable opportunity to find some new facts and insights.

Moreover, happiness is something that we all pursue, however, enormously broad and very conceptual.

Thus, we would like to discuss on what determinants of happiness would be worthwhile digging in the survey. Should we look for the area of health, such as happiness related to mental health, physical health, or emotional health? Or, the area of hope. Should we look into how people become happy with their  goal achievement, personal growth, or economic growth? And lastly, harmony. Should we explore how youths feel happy in cultural harmony, religious harmony, or family harmony?

Interestingly, the happiness index for Nepal in World Happiness Report has shown an upward trend, with the latest value in 2024 being 93rd place, the highest in South Asia. Nepalis' ability to find joy amidst difficulties, their communal support, and a positive outlook contribute to their happiness, making Nepal stand out as a beacon of contentment in the region. What does this really mean?

If the topic lured you in some way, please join the discussion so that we can come up with a good survey questions and reliable data to represent the real world of Nepali youths.

Time: May 11, 2024, (Sat) 15:15 NPT, 18:30-20:00 JST

Hope to hear your views!

Sept event in 2023

It has been a while. Hope everything is going well at your end.

While juggling our busy schedules, we ventured into change the framework of our discussion and needed some time to coordinate.
Hope you like the new format.

For the September event, we would like to discuss Big Tech and financial inclusion.

Chinese Big Techs such as Ant and Tencent are enablers for promoting financial inclusion for the unbanked/underbanked users in the region. Their endeavors push the world to become cashless. Moreover, their strategies align with the World Bank's idea of financial inclusion as key enablers to reduce extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity.

In fact, with other digital payment innovations (ex. m-pesa), the global account ownership increased from 51% to 76% between 2011 and 2021.

Big Techs in heavy user-based region, such as US and China have access to client data and make use of them, which financial institutions doesn't have such ability. Also, their technological expertise/data, enable them to tailor their offerings in finance by accessing low-cost capitals. As of 2021, Financial services of Big Techs are 11% of their total revenue. 3 Big Techs are expanding to South East Asia, East Africa, and Latin America, where rigid banking network is not established. There is potential growth in this area for Big Techs.

Big Techs are making investment in Africa. Amazon in expanding in South Africa, Microsoft is planning to provide access to 100M Africans, Meta is building an undersea cable. 4 China is promoting Digital Silk Road in Africa setting up data centers and Smart City initiatives in Ghana, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe. Chinese techs such as Huawei and ZTE are offering next generation technology for the ICT infrastructure in Africa. 5

African continent is projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, where there are only 1/3 of the population using internet. 6 There is a huge potential for Big Techs to run their business including finance in the area.

However, we still have some challenges in usage gaps. One is due to affordability of the users to purchase devices. Second is the lack of digital skills and literacy, which is bringing a new digital illiteracy/literacy gap. Third challenge is the lack of content in local languages. 7

DP 1: Do you think it true that World Bank's idea of financial inclusion as a key enabler to reduce extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity?

DP 2: What kind of new issues may arise when the world becomes more cashless?
(ex. In Japan, there will be more scams using cashless transactions.)

DP 3: How does the emergence of digital payments in countries where there is a high illiteracy rate and a large number of people do not possess smart phones affect their financial inclusion?

March Event in 2023
It has been a while after the last meeting in 2022.
2023 has started with another heartbreaking natural disaster in Turkey and Syria.
There is no way for us humans to defeat nature, but only to overcome challenges and
survive from its impact. Sending prayers to people in the region.
Not any of us won't be able to get away with this ordeal in the current world.
These geohazards may happen any time any where.
Having said that, we will reunite and keep on discussing issues happening in the world around us.

<Topic 2>
Global Trends 2040 report is published by the United States National Intelligence Council every 4 years. It analyzes and assesses the key trends that may impact their national security strategy for the next 20 years. The output is categorized into four areas: Demographic and Human development, Environment, Economy, and Technology.

We would like to take the key takeaways from “Demographic and Human Development” and dig into local issues relevant to us.
Here are some of the trends:
-Africa will account for almost all global population growth during the next two decades and will be rapidly urbanizing at the same time portending extra strains on infrastructure, education and healthcare.
-Jobs are necessary for the high working-age population countries in North Africa, Middle East, South Asia, and Latin America.
-Urbanization advances in Africa and Asia, unemployment, weak food security, disaster prone environment will be observed.
-Rapid population growth will push migration in Sub Sahara Africa.
-Aging countries to expand  immigrants (anti-immigrant backlash may occur)
-Aging countries will gain lower productivity, national income diverted to pensions and healthcare for seniors
DP 1:What is your gut-reactions? Do you have doubts on the output? Do you agree with the analysis? Do you have any concerns?
DP 2: What will be the major concern for you. Tell us the reason why you think so.
DP 3: What do you see as the obstacles to resolve the issues?

<Topic 3>

The assassination of the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took the news by storm in the summer of 2022. It is reported that the assassin's mother was a member of the Unification Church (an international religious group), and that she was forced to donate large amounts of money to the group. As the distressed assassin believed that Abe was associated with the Unification Church, he chose to protest against the group by executing Abe, who was presumed to be a prominent member.

This issue raises many important questions and demands deep reflection.

What can a religious group do to destabilize society?

What are the benefits and disadvantages of being religiously devout in today's political and economic climate?
Do the youth have a role to play in resisting violent activities that are done as a result of political motives?

<Topic 4>
History of Women’s University in each country highly depends on the country’s system, social environment, and cultural influences. The development of capitalism, maturity level of the private sector, religious impact/Confucianism, and war have affected the development of Women’s University in each country.
Mainly, Women University was established to enable women to acquire the qualifications they need to make an active contribution to society, notwithstanding its male-oriented social structures.
Japan Today says "As of 2018, there are 77 women’s universities in Japan, accounting for 9.8% of all universities (782 universities). In fact, Japan’s ratio is remarkably high compared with countries such as the U.S. with 1.3% (2016 data) or South Korea with 3.1% (2016 data)."
Some of the Women’s Universities are facing challenges as to how they can attract excellent talents and compete with other institutions in/out of their countries.
DP 1: Do you have Women Universities in your country?
DP 2: What do you think is the role of the Women’s University? What are their mission? What do you think they are expected to achieve from the society?

<Theme 1> World Happiness Report

The World Happiness Report is a publication that contains articles and rankings of national happiness, based on respondent ratings of their own lives, which the report also correlates with various (quality of) life factors. The report is a publication of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, a global initiative of the United Nations. Its goal is to find a better way to measure how good or bad a person’s life is in different countries rather than looking at just GDP and saying that a person’s life is good when GDP is high. After all GDP doesn’t tell everything about citizens lives.

World Happiness Report looks at GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support in times of need, corruption rates, trust in society, generosity and freedom to make important life decisions. It creates a survey based on these topics and gives them to different countries’ citizens to answer on a scale of 0-10. 0 means the worst possible life and 10 being the best possible life.

Question 1: What do you think it means for a country to be happy?

Question 2: How countries could increase their happiness?

<Theme 2> Staggering Levels of Migration

Climate change may lead billions of people to migrate to the North. Some people have already moved because they lost their homes and others may become refugees from the ongoing extreme weather everywhere on the planet.

Looking back, humans have historically migrated to other parts of the world. There are also successful cases of migrants dwelling in the new communities and helping to build new cities.

The author is optimistic that the humans will cope with the mass migration and avoid tragic conflict across the world.

DP 1: Do you know a successful case where any countries or cities managed the large population of migrants?

DP 2: Do you agree with the author that the world will tackle with the climate migrants as a global issue?

<Theme 3>

Great Youth Talents

Youth all around the world are taking social and environmental change initiatives for about more than 10 years. According to the Eurobarometer survey,  "majority (58%) of young people are active in the societies they live in and have participated in one or more youth organisations over the last 12 months."

DP:  Have you been engaging in any social and environmental change activities? Tell us your stories, how you got involved and what you have achieved. Or are you the one thinking of getting involved in any initiatives? Or are you an advocate of any activities? Tell us what your interests are and your next steps.

The first event in 2022

Let’s discuss the following 2 topics: Happiness and Mobile Finance in Africa.

Because happiness is something truly subjective, there is no correct answer what Happiness is for each of us. If we can count happiness, there should be a number of happiness for the number of people we
observe. Also, although it is a very important element of our
lives, we tend to forget or even ignore what happiness is
especially when we are fed up with our own lives.

This opportunity will give us a chance to look at your happiness
by listening to what other's views on happiness.

Mobile Finance in Africa will give us ideas on what is emerging
in Africa's mobile industry. We will look into the movements
happening and foresee what will evolve from this event. Can
not keep our eyes off from this trend.

If you are interested in joining,  please contact and
sign up at info@tada-ed.com.

See you there!

Happiness is very difficult to measure, since our view of lives can be transient and subjective. However, no people will say they want to live to be “unhappy.”Everyone ultimately want to live to be happy. Thus, seeking happiness is a very crucial element of life to make the most of our lives.

DP 1: What are the three factors that contribute to your happiness? Does it happen when you do something? Or is it a state of mind when you are in the moment or have something? And let us know why.

DP 2: Any comments on the article?

The rich poor gap in America is obscene. So let's fix it
<Summary> Income and wealth inequality is a political, moral, economical crisis. Working families are struggling for their lives, while a handful of rich is becoming more richer.

<Theme 3>
